UFC 213 Embedded 4: It's All About Family

The UFC 213 fight against Shevchenko was supposed to be a rematch, as Nunes won a fight against her at UFC 196 by unanimous decision. That victory over Pena earned her a title shot. Nunes relied on low kicks to take a slow first round. "The Lioness" instantly returned the favor, landing in Shevchenko's half-guard. Two judges scored the lopsided round 10-8.

The key to winning this fight will be patience, especially considering that it will be contested over five rounds.

"I'm mentally ready for everything after that and 100 percent ready for this next one", Nunes said. She grew up in Brazil and began learning English only a few years ago. It's the UFC's biggest week on the calendar. Nunes calmly took her downed opponent's back, sunk in both hooks and tapped Tate with a rear-naked choke.

UFC 213 was already shaping up to be not quite the huge blockbuster event that the UFC had been originally been hoping for earlier in the year to celebrate International Fight Week in Las Vegas, and recently suffered another blow when Robbie Lawler Vs Donald Cerrone had to be removed due to an injury. From the staredown until the knockout finish, Nunes' confidence and composure never wavered.

Since that encounter, Nunes went on to defeat Miesha Tate for the title before defending it against Ronda Rousey at UFC 207 in December, dominating the former champion in a stunning 48-second win.

Shevchenko is known, understandably, for a world-class combination of Muay Thai, kickboxing and taekwondo. In addition, Romero is one of the most decorated wrestlers on the UFC roster, but he's also showcased fearsome power and athleticism.

Despite Jedrzejczyk's boldness and the fact that she competes at a division 20 pounds south of 135 pounds, the idea of the fight isn't that ridiculous. She used heavy top position to win the opening round. But Shevchenko is back and this evening could see the Russian crowned champion. Now, Shevchenko puts her momentum on the line as she tries to pick up where she left off. Nunes is excellent in the first round of fights and typically able to start off with a lead in her bouts. That's where the champion finds herself again; this title defense hovers around a pick 'em, with some books slightly favoring Shevchenko.

Shevchenko can't be content to yield the opening exchanges.

Nunes' cardio has to hold up better.

What really stood out in this bout was her ability to turn it on in the championship rounds.

Pettis' two-fight experience with the featherweight division is done, abandoned after a pair of brutal weight cuts and a third-round stoppage loss to Max Holloway last victor in Toronto. I think that is maybe the more intriguing fight in a lot of ways.

Nunes v Shevchenko 2 TV broadcast will air on BT Sport 2, as well as being available on the BT Sport app. Both showcased deft trips last March, as damage inflicted in top position made all the difference. The 29-year-old has won five straight fights.
