The poll also revealed that 51% of those polled are dissatisfied with the way Trump is doing his job. If Trump wants to win reelection, he would likely need to get his average approval rating closer to 50 percent, according to the release.

The average approval rating for U.S. presidents in their second quarter is 62 percent, meaning Trump's support is 23 percentage points below the historical norm, Gallup said.

"It's very sad that Republicans, even some that were carried over the line on my back, do very little to protect their President", he said in a second tweet shortly after. The president scored less than 40 percent in the remaining 17 states.

In Washington, the president fares slightly worse, with 36 percent giving a thumbs up and 59 percent in opposition.

About 56 percent told pollsters they disapprove of President Trump. California and NY rounded out the bottom five, giving Trump a 30 and 31 percent respectively. However, approval was in the low 40s in several states he won in November, including in states like Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania, where he won razor-thin victories that put him over the top in the Electoral College. Residents in an equal number of states gave him approval ratings below 40 percent.

The data indicates that Trump still enjoys firm support in one third of the country while his approval rating is abysmal in another third, with the remainder mixed on his job performance.

Surprisingly, those that believe Trump won't finish his first term include 11 percent of Republicans.

The poll found that 42 percent believe the president ought to be removed from office, with the same percentage believing he should stay. The Monmouth survey found that 41 percent believe Trump should be impeached and forced to leave, compared to 53 percent who do not.
