Manchester Airport EVACUATED as Brits stranded on runway

They said in a statement on Twitter: "Manchester Airport can confirm that our routine baggage screening programme in Terminal 3 identified a bag which appeared to contain a suspicious item".

The airport have made an announcement advising passengers that terminal three will remain closed at present while safety precautions continue.

"Bomb disposal officers attended and a series of controlled explosions were carried out of the package", the Greater Manchester Police said.

Pictures have emerged of people stranded on the tarmac next to rows of planes, and others left standing on stairs and in other terminals.

Terminal 3 at the airport was evacuated earlier this morning over concerns into regard to a bag.

"Passengers using Terminals 1 and 2 should travel as normal".

Hundreds of people were forced to leave the terminal as a precaution and told to go to Terminal One for more information.

The two evacuations followed similar incidents at London Heathrow's Terminal 3 and London Euston station which were both cleared due to fire alerts.

Manchester Airport is the third biggest airport in the country and sees 22 million passengers pass through its doors each year.
