1 killed, 2 wounded at Israeli embassy in Jordan

At least one person was killed on Sunday in a shooting incident at the Israeli embassy in Amman, according to media reports.

"An initial investigation indicated that three people were wounded, one an Israeli who was taken to hospital", it said, adding that two Jordanians were wounded and one later died of his injuries. "Large numbers" of security personnel are said to be at the scene and the suspect's auto is being searched, according to The Independent.

A police statement said two Jordanian men working for a furniture firm had entered the embassy before the shooting in the late afternoon.

Hala Akhbar, a news site linked to the Jordanian military, said the Israeli man was in "unstable" condition.

The security source told AFP the casualties were the result of an unspecified "incident".

Security forces opened fire when a Jordanian national reportedly stabbed an Israeli personnel at the embassy in Amman, said security sources.

A heavier-than-usual Jordanian security presence was seen near the embassy Sunday evening.

Several thousand Jordanians demonstrated on Friday against Israel, urging a jihad (holy struggle) in protests in Amman and in cities and refugee camps across the kingdom.

The incident comes amid mounting tensions between Israelis and Palestinians over metal detectors that Israel has installed at Jerusalem's Temple Mount.

A crowd estimated at more than 8,000 turned out for a demonstration called by Islamist movements and leftist parties.
