Ronaldo, Benzema help Real Madrid claim La Liga title

Real Madrid's players headed straight back to Madrid on Sunday night to celebrate with their supporters after winning the club's 33rd La Liga title in Malaga - their first for five years.

Real Madrid beat Malaga 2-0, thanks to goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema to lift the La Liga title.

Cristiano Ronaldo has been faced with criticism ever since he moved to the La Liga but has been able to maintain his goal scoring record for the La Liga Champions and could lead the team to another Champions League glory.

Zinedine Zidane claimed winning the La Liga title as Real coach surpassed his stellar achievement of winning the 1998 World Cup with France as a player and even lifting the Champions League in his debut season as coach past year.

Ramos, who a year ago also draped the Cibele goddess with a flag after Madrid won the Champions League title, recorded the moment on his cell phone and shared it with the fans. Zidane's ability to keep those that under previous coaches have felt sidelined motivated and involved has also borne fruit in keeping the likes of Ronaldo, Luka Modric, and Toni Kroos fit, fresh and in their best form of the season at the business end of the campaign.

Under Luis Enrique, Barcelona has won the Champions League, the Club World Cup, two Spanish leagues and a pair of Copa del Rey titles.

"We have done our job by winning today but we have been up against a rival who has just been a little better than us, they are a deserving champion", he explained to BeIN.

"We are going to Malaga to win the game, that's always our objective".

Zinedine Zidane's transformation of Real Madrid from crisis club to champions has been rooted not in the glamour of relying purely on "Galactico" talent, but fostering a team spirit and never say die attitude.

Having convinced Ronaldo that he is not in fact invincible by taking him off in a game late in March against Athletic Bilbao, he also let the squad and the world know that under his cool and calm demeanour was a steely and, at times, ruthless operator.

"We have reached the end of the season with the opportunity to win two titles".

In Barcelona, Enrique was given a warm send-off at the Camp Nou as he was greeted with a giant banner reading: "One of us forever".

Pepe wants to extend his Real Madrid career into an 11th season.

The race for first place came down to the final games of the season.
