Red Sox tab lefty Brian Johnson to start Friday against Tigers

Boston Red Sox reliever Carson Smith in two seasons with the team has only had three appearances, all of them coming in the 2016 season.

The last full season Smith pitched came in 2015 where he pitched in 70 games with a 2.31 ERA in 70 innings pitched for the Seattle Mariners.

The win improves the Red Sox to 33-27 on the season and snaps a two-game losing streak.

Alex Wilson (1-3), who started the eighth with Detroit up 3-2, took the loss after allowing three runs on four hits.

It was only a matter of time before the Red Sox bats woke up Friday night, and when they did, they came loudly.

Nicholas Castellanos and Mikey Mahtook homered and Martinez and Jose Iglesias both had three hits for the Tigers (29-31). Moreland led off the fourth with a homer for Boston, which rallied from a 3-0 deficit to open a five-game homestand.

An infield single by Victor Martinez knocked Johnson out of the game with one out in the fourth and Heath Hembree was greeted by a long double from J.D. Martinez. Boston still had two runners on and one out, but the rally ended when Pablo Sandoval hit into a double play. Bradley also drove in a run with a single in the fourth. The center fielder seems to be breaking out of a slump at the plate.

Boston recalled left-hander Brian Johnson from Triple-A Pawtucket and started him against the Tigers on Friday.

The Tigers left the top of the first with a 2-0 lead, with Johnson already having made 27 pitches after some grounders made their way out of the infield, and the pitcher's fate this night was already showing itself.
