Rays' Kevin Kiermaier on DL with broken hip after slide

Following the game, Kiermaier said he chose to slide as an attempt to avoid a collision with White Sox first baseman, Jose Abreu, who was running to step on the bag.

The Tampa Bay Rays have officially acquired infielder Taylor Featherston in a trade with the Philadelphia Phillies, the club announced on Friday afternoon. After a litany of tests - MRI, CT scan, x-rays, etc. - Kiermaier's doctors discovered a hairline fracture in his right hip.

Featherston is on Rays' major league roster, and will get another shot at the big league level. Yet, he was still doing well at the plate, having already hit seven home runs and was on pace to surpass his 2016 total of 20.

Kiermaier's elite defensive ability was a large factor in earning him the six-year contract extension that he received in March of this year.

The speedy Mallex Smith will likely see the lion's share of the starts in center field for the next couple months. He's stolen 10 bases so far this season and is ranked eighth in the American League with a 2.4 WAR. Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports that Kiermaier will need 6-8 weeks for the fracture to heal before then working his way back into baseball shape. He's played well both offensively and defensively there.

"He's going to be out a while", Cash said.

The Rays are lucky to have Smith.
