India thrash Pak 6-1 in Hockey World League

The Indian hockey team continued their domination of arch-foes Pakistan, handing them a 6-1 thrashing in a 5th-8th place classification match of the Hockey World League Semifinals here Saturday.

The victor of Pakistan and India clash will play the fifth position match and the loser will figure in the seventh place game.

It was India's second big win over Pakistan in six days, they had earlier beaten the green shirts 7-1 in their league match, said the information made available to APP here.

It was only in the third quarter that Pakistan struck back with a goal, but by then, it was already too late. India, ranked sixth in the world, crashed out of the podium race after suffering a 2-3 loss to 14th placed Malaysia in a quarterfinal match on Thursday.

All is not lost for Malaysia, who can still qualify for their maiden World Hockey League Finals in India later this year, if they win the third-fourth playoff against the victor of the other semi-final between England and the Netherlands.

India took their lead to a convincing 4-0 in the second quarter. Harmanpreet converted a short corner to make it 5-0.

The second quarter was the best period in the game for the Indians. Pardeep Mor sent a hammering drive to the goalmouth with Talwinder making the final touch at the near post.

Pakistan should have cleared the ball entering their circle from the left side but the faulty clearance gave Ramandeep the chance to slot the loose ball in from a close range. A Pakistan defender tried to clear the ball from inside the goal post but he could only nick it. Ramandeep got hold of the ball and hit in in between the legs of the keeper for the opener.

This time, Pakistan's struggling goalkeeper Amjad Ali dived to his right to deflect Harmanpreet's low drag flick and save himself the embarrassment conceding seven goals to India in successive outings in the same tournament.

Both sets of players are coming out for their respective national anthems.
