China will continue with climate pact even if US pulls out

Trump tweeted late Wednesday that he would announce his decision at 3 p.m. ET Thursday in the White House Rose Garden, ending his message with "MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!"

Under the Paris Accord, almost 200 nations agreed in 2015 to voluntarily cut greenhouse gas emissions in a landmark agreement to fight climate change.

In his first major speech on climate change since he assumed charge as the head of the United Nations this January, the United Nations secretary-general said the "world is in a mess" and urged the worldwide community to "stay the course" even if one government does not believe in the emissions-cutting deal.

The CEO of both Tesla (TSLA) and SpaceX tweeted Wednesday that he's done everything possible to lobby the president to keep the the treaty.

"It will be a disaster for everyone", Bishop Marcelo Sanchez Sorondo told the Rome newspaper La Repubblica.

World leaders were left frustrated last week when six leaders from the G7 summit reaffirmed their support for the accord, while Trump claimed he needed more time to consider the implications.

After a day of rumours about the Republican leader's plans, with some aides reportedly saying a withdrawal was likely and others saying no decision had been taken, Trump said he was ready to make his stance known.

Almost 200 countries signed onto the accord in 2015, vowing to fight climate change. Virtually every nation voluntarily committed to steps aimed at curbing global emissions of "greenhouse" gases.

In 2015, it released 5.1 million kilotons of carbon dioxide, more than all 28 European Union countries combined, and makes up nearly a sixth of all global emissions.

China and the European Union are set to issues a statement at a high-level meeting in Brussels committing to implement the climate deal, in a effort to bolster the pact as Trump appears set to abandon it.

Deese said if the USA pulls out, it will lose an important opportunity to add jobs and economic growth as a leader in the clean energy economy.

Since taking office on 20 January, Trump, who has called climate change a "hoax", has sent contradictory signals on the Paris deal.

During his campaign, Trump pledged to "cancel the Paris agreement".

Criticism of the proposal to withdraw from the accord isn't just coming from Democrats in MA. Emissions were 12% lower as of 2015, as per the US Energy Information Administration.

Almost 200 world leaders, including the US, agreed in 2015 to voluntarily reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. "The declines in USA emissions in the last decade have largely happened without strong climate policies, and a withdrawal from the Paris Agreement may have minimal effect on US emissions but give a hit to worldwide morale".

A year ago was the warmest since records began in the 19th century. A panel of leading climate scientists found in 2014 at least a 95-percent probability that man-made greenhouse gas emissions have caused most of the warming since around 1950.

A pullout by the United States, the world's second-largest contributor to carbon emissions behind China, could have sweeping implications.

The EU and China have reportedly signed an agreement to counteract any action by the USA that might undermine the Paris agreement.

And European Council President Donald Tusk took to Twitter, Trump's preferred medium, to communicate an EU-wide plea to his US-level counterpart: "Please don't change the [political] climate for the worse".

Trump's influential daughter Ivanka Trump's preference is to stay, but she has made it a priority to establish a review process so her father would hear from all sides, said a senior administration official.

China's Premier Li Keqiang said fighting climate change is a "global consensus" and "international responsibility".
