Atari CEO confirms the company is working on a new game console

A week ago, a video was posted onto YouTube by Atari that showed off what might have been a remastered version of the Atari 2600 console.

Atari CEO Fred Chesnais spoke with Venture Beat recently and said that "We're back in the hardware business".

Chesnais bought Atari back in 2013 after the company filed for bankruptcy protection, and has turned it around since then, It's now profitable, largely due to its success in the mobile game market. It is licensing its brands more widely, such as licensing its Atari name for the upcoming Blade Runner 2049 movie. Last week the company floated a link on social media that led the users to a website which had nothing but a video that offered a glimpse of the new console being prepared by the company. It sounds like the Ataribox is being developed in-house, and will hopefully boast improved emulation, more features, and better build quality. That mini-retro console was a big hit despite only coming with 30 games and having wired controllers with short cables.

Details about this new gaming console, supposedly called "AtariBox", remain unclear. He doesn't say much else besides the fact that the system is based on PC technology.

Atari has had a hard past at times, with the company filing for bankruptcy protection in 2013.

Of course, the other way could be an actual new console that will be competing against Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft.
