Trump views Germany as political opponent: senior SPD lawmaker

Speaking at a joint press conference during her visit to the White House, Chancellor Merkel said that Germany will increase military spending but North Atlantic Treaty Organisation objective will not be met until 2022 and the German government in the past rejected paying past dues suggesting that North Atlantic Treaty Organisation doesn't have a debit account.

While India is massively expanding its coal production, Modi has pledged to simultaneously grow solar such that it will make up more than half of the world's production by 2022.

The German and Indian governments signed numerous agreements, including on cyber cooperation, development cooperation, education and railway safety.

When a reporter asked Spicer to explain why Merkel said Europe "could no longer depend on the United States", Spicer disputed that claim.

"One day after Donald Trump infuriated Angela Merkel and the rest of his G-7 peers, when the United States president refused to endorse the Paris climate treaty, prompting the German chancellor to say that “the whole discussion about climate has been hard, or rather very unsatisfactory. here we have the situation that six members, or even seven if you want to add the European Union, stand against one", Germany's prime minister made what many have dubbed, an "era-defining" statement.

Modi also stated that "India and Germany are made for each other".

Addressing the media after the meeting, Prime Minister Modi said an outcome oriented momentum is perceptible in relations between the two countries.

White House spokesman Sean Spicer, asked about the president's relationship with Merkel, told a news briefing: "They get along very well. German business and industry is important partner in achievements of India's economic priorities", he added.

The Prime Minister will be discussing ways to enhance bilateral engagement, especially in economic sphere, and cooperation on global issues of common concern, particularly in combating terrorism.

"That benefits Europe.that benefits everybody", he said.

The Prime Minister said in his discussions with Merkel both the countries were looking at outcome oriented momentum in bilateral ties and a quantum jump especially in economic relations.

Not only does the spat continue but Merkel has seized upon it as an opportunity - in the wake of the election of Emmanuel Macron as a pro-Europe French president - to rally Europe around her leadership.

He said climate change and living in harmony with nature was part of India's ethos.
