Rafael Nadal wins 30th Masters title in Madrid

The ATP stars hot-foot it this week from Madrid to Rome for the next Masters event - and the last big tournament before the French Open.

"Most things weren't working particularly well", Murray said. "What's important to me is to make it to another final".

Ronaldo could be seen smiling with joy as Nadal closed out the final set and booking his place in the latter stage of the tournament. He reached the last four in Madrid after Kei Nishikori withdrew before the quarterfinals because of an injury.

"It's a huge win, for sure". I made a lot of unforced errors, especially the first set... "I was trying my best", Djokovic said. That was very obvious. His resurgence in 2017, though, was one of the stories of the season so far: Finals at the Australian Open, Miami and Acapulco, plus his 10th title in Monte-Carlo and 10th in Barcelona.

The 30-year-old had a special recognition for Thiem who has been his rival in the last two finals.

Vesely, from the Czech Republic, needed only one hour and 16 minutes to run out a comfortable 6-3, 6-1 victor and bridge a gap of five places in the world rankings. He erased three match points before Nadal sliced a backhand volley for the title.

Tim went to the third final in the current season, in Rio de Janeiro, the Austrian became the champion, and in Barcelona lost the decisive meeting of the tournament.

Nadal had easily defeated Thiem in Barcelona, losing only five games in a two-set victory, but was forced to work a lot harder on Sunday.

Nadal broke in the opening game of set two and made it stand up. “I saved a few set points playing some good shots with my forehand.

“Anything could have happened at the end of the first set, but I think I played well the important points at the end, ” Nadal said.

The Spaniard also dismissed the suggestion he had a stronger chance against Djokovic given the Serbian's slow start to the year.

The Madrid Open was Djokovic's first tournament since he parted ways with longtime coach Marian Vajda and two other team members to try to regain his "winning spark on the court".

Nastase has been banned from the French Open and Wimbledon after he was ejected from Romania's Fed Cup clash with Great Britain last month for a series of foul-mouthed rants directed at British captain Anne Keothavong and No. 1 Johanna Konta, as well as umpires and members of the press.

Rafael Nadal picked up his fifth Madrid Open title when edging past Dominic Thiem in straight sets on Sunday.

Romania's Simona Halep successfully defended her Madrid Open title in the Women's Tennis Association Premier Mandatory event. Rafa reminded us how he used to play 10 years ago when he set many records on this turf and was practically untouchable.

Kristina Mladenovic of France advanced to the final four by overcoming seven double faults to beat Sorana Cirstea of Romania 6-4, 6-4.
