Politicians, cops attend wedding of Dawood's niece; raise suspicions

Pune: Nationalist Congress Party leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Thursday demanded the resignation of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Girish Mahajan over his presence at the wedding of an alleged relative of gangster Dawood Ibrahim in Nashik last week. Also, a few Nashik police officials had attended the wedding, following which Nashik Police Commissioner Ravindra Singhal had ordered an inquiry against these officers.

BJP legislators Devyani Farande, Balasaheb Sanap and Seeema Hiray, Nashik mayor Ranjana Bhanasi and deputy mayor Prathamesh Gite (both of the BJP) and some local municipal councillors accompanied Mahajan.

The high-profile wedding on 19 May was held at a mall in Nashik's Mahatma Nagar area. The policemen were reportedly invited by clerics.

Sources in police department have claimed that an Assistant Commissioner of Police or ACP-rank officer also attended the function. As per reports, local politicians including corporators and legislators also attended the event. According to reports, the bride is Dawood Ibrahim's wife's niece.

"The invitation for the marriage was sent to some police officials of Bhadrakali police station and also to some corporators, political personalities, MLAs etc", he told PTI.

The police commissioner said the statements of the police personnel, who attended the marriage of Dawood's relatives, are being recorded.

He further said, "It will take two days to complete the internal inquiry against the officials as some of them are on leave". "This shows how Dawood's well wishers are entrenched in the system", Sawant said. Mahajan is the minister for water conservation and medical education as well as the guardian minister of Nashik district.

The BJP maintains that Mr Mahajan's clarification - he has told his party that he had attended the wedding on receiving an invitation from the bridegroom's father and he was clueless about the bride's family - is sufficient.
