Mets ace Noah Syndergaard exits in 2nd inning with injury

WASHINGTON (AP) - Nationals third baseman Anthony Rendon said he'd never had a day like this one. 404 after registering three hits in Sunday's 5-3 win.

The Nationals scored at least 10 runs for the fourth time in less than a week. Too often when players suffer injuries, it is the coaches who take a precautionary approach. "But I don't have any real motive to be overly optimistic, because I know what is at the other end of that overly optimistic projection". After another terrific outing against the A's on Sunday, he's now sporting a 1.21 ERA and 0.81 WHIP in 44 2/3 innings. His home-run-to-fly ball ratio (25 percent) is 10 percent higher than his career average and, because Statcast™ shows only a moderate rise in average launch angle, it's not a number worth trusting just yet. But he and Walker Cooper are the only ones to accomplish the feat with 10 RBI.

The question is, what did Darling mean when he said, "Luckily I wasn't there?". "He's swinging it. Everyone's swinging it pretty well".

TIGERS 7, WHITE SOX 3: Jose Iglesias doubled and drove in three runs at Detroit, helping the White Sox stop a four-game losing streak. However, Syndergaard let up five earned runs to the Nats, and was taken out of the game with a "possible lat strain" after pitching just one and one-third innings. He worked a scoreless inning Sunday for Double-A Bowie, two days after recording two outs and allowing a run on a hit and two walks. It was good to see him tear it loose today.

The season isn't over, but with the way things have been going, it sure feels like it's slipping out of the Mets' hands little by little while the rest of us just helplessly watch.

- The Nationals are the first team in major league history to score 14-plus runs in five April games, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. He has 11 hits in his last 16 at-bats.

The Nationals went on to post a franchise-record for runs, winning the game 23-5. If the Rockies can continue to play over.500, which they should, then their chances are that much greater. He had 53 career home runs and 233 RBIs.

Plawecki came on to pitch in the seventh, and the first batter he faced was Rafael Bautista, who flied out to center in his first major league at-bat.

Jay Bruce had three hits for NY, including a solo home run. Adam Lind and Bryce Harper also homered, and Harper scored four times. "Well, he was on base enough". "He finished extremely strong this April". Only Zimmerman and Freddie Freeman have a higher OPS.

Washington Nationals manager Dusty Baker, whose team set a franchise record for runs, said he noticed something about Syndergaard in the first inning.

It's easy to understand why Syndergaard would look at the Mets, particularly considering how Matz and Harvey have struggled to stay healthy, and wonder if he knew his own body better than a team that might overuse him and wear him out before free agency, or underuse him and lose a shot at a World Series with a lesser pitcher on the mound.

All those home runs come at a cost: Strikeouts are up yet again, from a rate of 21.1 percent last season to 21.6 percent in 2017.
