Mariners have four-game winning streak snapped

Marco Estrada rebounded nicely from a rough first inning against the red-hot Seattle Mariners. The right-hander is 4-0 with a 1.35 ERA in four road starts this season.

The Blue Jays scratched out a run in the first inning and then struck for five more against Seattle starter Chase De Jong (0-3) in the fifth, capped by Pearce's fourth homer of the season. Freeman is batting.074 (2-for-27) and Gosewisch is batting.077 (1-for-13) Dyson's average is plunging toward the Mendoza Line at.202.

"I could see him being a good major-league starter", Gibbons said. They came back to defeat the Cleveland Indians 8-7 on a walk-off single by Ryan Goins, who has done admirably replacing Tulowitzki. Balls are starting to leave the ball park. Nevertheless, the Mariners have chose to deploy him as much more of a LOOGY this year: he's seen 21 lefties and only six righties total at this early point in the season. And we're getting some breaks along the way.

"The only problem", Beeston was so kind to point out to Gibbons at the end of his tale, "we had to fire Jimy Williams".

"It was never a lack of confidence", he said.

Felix Hernandez (right shoulder inflammation), almost-Jay James Paxton (left forearm strain) and Drew Smyly (left flexor strain) are the other starters on the DL. He made his first career start five days earlier against the Rays, pitching four innings and allowing one run. He now has four homers this season and two in his past three games.

Of course, there's still plenty of work to be done but the Blue Jays and fans alike need to believe they'll continue to succeed as their players make their way back to the starting lineup.

"The changeup is a pitch I've been working on a lot", Biagini said.

The Mariners come into tonight's game 17-18, in second place in the American League West. Billy Hamilton also had a two-run single and Adam Duvall added an RBI single as the Reds won for the sixth time in seven games.

Steve Pearce hit a three-run home run, Justin Smoak had a solo homer and finished with four RBIs, and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Mariners 7-2 on Thursday night, snapping Seattle's win streak at four games. I wanted to try to have a little bit different perspective on it, mindset on it this season.

Robinson Cano sat out a second straight game with tightness in his right quad. There is no guarantee that Cano, who has been hot with the bat, will be able to play Saturday.

"I thought he hung in there fine", Mariners manager Scott Servais said. "That's part of it. You've got to keep grinding". It has been frequently discussed that the Jays have struggled with pitchers they face for the first time.

Even better, in those innings he's allowed just six hits while striking out seven. But two pitches later, Ben Gamel hit a rocket to deep centre field, just out of the reach of a sprinting Pillar, which brought in Dyson with a game-tying run.

Biagini has been outstanding to start the year, with a 2.28 ERA, 2.58 SIERA, 22.9 percent strikeout rate, 2.9 percent walk rate and 0.87 WHIP.

The four pitchers to have taken turns filling in - Casey Lawrence, Mat Latos, reliever Joe Biagini, and most recently Mike Bolsinger, have combined for an 0-4 record with 23 earned runs over 36 innings in seven starts, at about a fifth the salary.
