China rappers to Seoul: 'Big brother' opposes missile shield

After the missile launch on Sunday, the United States, Japan and South Korea called a UN Security Council meeting to press the DPRK to change course and dismantle its missile and nuclear programmes. "The United States reconfirmed its firm commitment to defend South Korea and both sides also agreed to strengthen collaborative efforts to deter North Korean provocations".

South Korea's newly-elected president said Wednesday that the possibility of a conflict with North Korea is high. "The reality is that there is a high possibility of a military conflict at the NLL (Northern Limit Line) and military demarcation line", Moon said.

"Launching ballistic missiles is a serious provocation that violates UN Security Council resolutions, as well as being a serious challenge to global peace and stability".

Last week, Moon Jae-in won the presidential election by campaigning on a more moderate approach to the North.

The U.S. troop presence in South Korea, a legacy of the Korean War, is primarily to guard against the North Korean threat.

"The risky behavior by North Korea is not just a threat to the Korean peninsula... it's a threat to China, it's a threat to Russia", Harris told a an academic forum in Tokyo.

"But there are no specific steps in the offing", Lee Duk-haeng, a spokesman for South Horea's unification ministry, told reporters.

North Korea has called on South Korea to honour previous inter-Korean agreements on co-operation and reconciliation, which Seoul's unification ministry described as "not logical" given Pyongyang was testing weapons.

Praising US President Donald Trump's tough stance against the Kim Jong Un regime, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has said the threat coming from North Korea's missile and nuclear programme is entering a new stage. What would you think would happen if North Korea used a nuclear weapon against the United States?

Trump's comments could not immediately be independently verified. South Korea was unable to verify the claims.

"You either support North Korea or you support us, because that's what it comes down to", Haley told reporters.

"I believe that China will stay true to that and we will come together on how we're going to do that", she said. The North ignored worldwide condemnation of its missile test, which demonstrated some disturbing advances in long-range missile technology, and insisted it would "conduct ICBM tests anytime and anywhere, in accordance with the decisions made by our central leadership".

"There have been very significant sanctions and pressure on North Korea and now there is atmosphere for dialogue between North Korea and the United States".

In its previous missile launch at the end of April, North Korea's regime suffered a second failure in a row with its latest ballistic missile test attempt amid continuing tensions with the US and South Korea.

Seoul/Washington: Cybersecurity researchers have found evidence they say could link North Korea with the WannaCry cyber attack that has infected more than 3 lakh computers worldwide, as global authorities scrambled to prevent hackers from spreading new versions of the virus.
