Browns To Sign Veteran CB Jason McCourty

Not much has been done this offseason to address the cornerback position, and fifth-round pick Howard Wilson suffered a fracture kneecap during rookie minicamp to further thin Cleveland's depth there. Last season, he started 14 games and led the Titans defensive backs with 64 tackles.

McCourty told's Mary Kay Cabot Wednesday that he is open to playing safety for the team, though he will start off at cornerback. By comparison, this is how PFF ranked the Browns' top three cornerbacks in 2016: Joe Haden 85th, Jamar Taylor 19th and Briean Boddy-Calhoun 71st.

McCourty, a product of Rutgers, became an expendable piece for the Titans after motioning in 26-year-old cornerback Logan Ryan, also a Rutgers alum, from the New England Patriots. Williams was a senior defensive assistant with Tennessee in 2013. However, McCourty struggled through a groin injury in 2015 and never fully recovered last season. It's possible, however, that McCourty could rebound.

After all, Butler returning gives the team one of the best secondaries in the National Football League - leaving no room for Jason McCourty, as much fun as it would have been seeing him play alongside his brother. McCourty was the Titans' longest-tenured player and a captain.

McCourty, 29, has been a starter since 2011.

McCourty was impressed with the Browns during his visit and said he likes "what is brewing within this organization in Cleveland".

"Just excited about the opportunity", McCourty said in a text message to ESPN's Paul Kuharsky. "I just think for both sides, we both respect the hell out of each other and enjoyed the time there, but I think we both knew the way the team's going there's really no place for me".
