Amazon unveils 7-inch touchscreen Echo Show with Alexa support

Amazon is bringing the update to all current Alexa devices: This was announced today alongside the eagerly anticipated Amazon Echo Show. With its 7-inch touchscreen, Echo Show looks more like a tablet than a speaker, but it's still all about voice control with Amazon's Alexa assistant.

Amazon's Alexa assistant is now only talking to you, but you will soon be able to have Alexa reach out and touch someone else. It can also show you weather reports or news briefings.

There is a new feature called "Drop In" which basically allows users to connect to another Echo Show without the other person having to accept the call.

However, the initial reaction to the Echo Show's design is not exactly positive, so developer may want to hold fire before cooking up some display-centric Alexa enabled apps. Echo Show is also an expertly tuned speaker that can fill any room with immersive audio powered by Dolby. The device's built -in 7inch touch screen adds some new abilities to the Echo Show. As the first Echo with a screen, customers can view a lot of the same information they might have previously checked on their smartphone.

However, because Alexa works without user names or numbers, the device itself won't be where your contacts are stored. Using Amazon's digital assistant, Alexa, it's capable of streaming music, reporting local weather/news, and tracking your Amazon purchases. The feature comes preloaded on the Echo Show.

"Now Alexa can show you things", the online retailing behemoth said on its site.

For those anxious about their privacy, the Echo Show has the lineup's signature mute button on top, which mutes both the microphones and the camera. The smart-speaker is now available for pre-orders from Amazon and will start shipping from June 28. If it's being used to stream music from Amazon Music, the display can show lyrics for that track.
