Talks between President Xi Jinping and his United States counterpart Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida last week have set a constructive tone for relations between the world's two largest economies, according to Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

But the two sides avoided any diplomatic gaffes at Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida that would have tarnished the meeting in the eyes of the protocol-conscious Chinese. Days before the meeting, Trump tweeted in order to signal the mood and expectations in Washington, DC.

President Donald Trump Thursday ordered targeted missile strikes on a Syrian airfield in retaliation for a chemical weapons attack blamed on the Syrian government that killed about 100 civilians. After months in which Mr. Trump, first as candidate, then as president-elect, and finally as President, castigated China for "raping" the United States, for "stealing" U.S.jobs and then announcing that he might depart from the "one China" policy adopted by the United States since the 1970s, China decided that it had to rein him in.

"It seems that both countries have understood the importance of how essential a smooth transition needs to be and not just for the two countries involved here but really for the entire world over", it said. He did not rule out additional strikes if Assad continued to engage in atrocities against rebel forces with either chemical or conventional weapons.

President Trump has asked his national security team to provide "a full range of options to remove" the threat posed by the North Korean regime to the U.S. and its allies, national security advisor H.R. McMaster said Sunday, a day after U.S. Pacific Command directed an aircraft carrier strike group to the region.

China's response was muted. Xinhua pointed out a US tendency to blow things up without a real concrete plan on what to do afterwards, stating "It has been a typical tactic of the U.S.to send a strong political message by attacking other countries using advanced warplanes and cruise missiles". Liu focused instead on the need for a political solution to the six-year Syrian conflict.
