LA Clippers Beat Jazz 99-91; Even Series At 1-1

The Jazz will be aiming to score another win in the Clippers' Staples Centre in downtown LA on Tuesday (Wednesday, 12.30pm AEST) to take a 2-0 lead in the best- of-seven first-round series. Beating the Utah Jazz without their best player is slightly easier.

Blake Griffin scored 24 points, and Los Angeles beat Utah in Game 2, 99-91, to even the Western Conference first-round playoff series at one game apiece. The contest hinged on LA's ability to squeeze points out of crevices because its outside shooting was missing in action for the second straight game.

The Rockets scored the first five points of the second half to push their lead to 10 early in the third quarter.

Quin Snyder went deep onto his bench in using a 10-man rotation, while Doc Rivers put forth only eight players, discounting Paul Pierce's two-minute stint.

LA supplemented its over-the-top threat with much-needed doses of early offense. Griffin had two points in the fourth quarter.

D'Antoni wants to make sure that his team realizes it still has a lot of work to do despite its big win. Chris Paul has to lead his team to a win tonight or their playoffs is going to be coming to an end. The [Jazz are] long, they're big, they're strong, they're great defensively. Favors entered Saturday's game after Gobert got hurt. "So we're going to have to come out and be ready for that".

All told, 10 of Griffin's 11 baskets came from within three feet.

Oklahoma City Thunder's Jerami Grant, left, goes up for a shot as Houston Rockets' Clint Capela defends during the first half in Game 1 of an NBA basketball first-round playoff series, Sunday, April 16, 2017, in Houston. "We need to open it up a little bit". But where they couldn't find any control in Game 1, they dictated just about everything that happened in Game 2.

All is not lost, though, even if Gobert's injury keeps him out for the entire series.

Getting Redick on track is just one of the things the Clippers tried to address in two days of practice between Games 1 and 2. Paul said to a reporter. Not that it was fouls or anything, they just allowed us to play, both teams. Help him attack closeouts to get into the middle of the floor. But in a game in which the Clippers didn't make 3-pointers (30 percent) and were just 5-of-8 from the free throw line, they still ate the Jazz alive. But, given the circumstances (Round 1 Game 1 at home, recent ownership of the opponent, All-Star caliber center injured on first possession), those who tend toward panic and overreaction have reason to see the sky falling. The Jazz only grabbed three offensive rebounds.

"They raised their level tonight", Snyder said of the Clippers. I don't think any of us really expected the good guys to win game one, but we had a hope of stealing it.
