Benintendi leads Red Sox over Rays 4-3 on Patriots' Day

Boston Red Sox's Pablo Sandoval, right, watches the flight of his two-run home run as Tampa Bay Rays catcher Jesus Sucre, left, looks on in the fourth inning of a baseball game, Sunday, April 16, 2017, in Boston.

Phillies 4, Nationals 2: Cesar Hernandez hit a tiebreaking, two-run homer off Joe Blanton in the eighth and Philadelphia stopped a four-game skid.

Sale walked Kevin Kiermaier to begin the third inning, and Steven Souza hits a single following a Tim Beckham strikeout. But the manager said, "Once he got through that inning, he got stronger as the game went along".

When at last they reached Kenmore Square on Monday, the runners of the 121st Boston Marathon had to find one more burst of energy to get them through the final three-quarters of a mile to the finish line.

Tampa Bay is playing in the traditional 11:05 a.m. ET game for the fourth time in the past eight years - but for the first time since 2013 - and the fifth time overall. Porcello has gone at least six innings in 20 consecutive starts, the majors' longest active streak.

Having to do so after losing starter Jake Odorizzi one pitch into the second due to left-hamstring tightness that landed him on the disabled list exponentially exacerbated the challenge. The Rays used four relievers.

"Outstanding effort by everybody that pitched after O", Cash said.

They made the move official a day later, but an arrival that normally would have been trumpeted was somber.

He will make his next start against the Houston Astros this weekend.

Said Cash: "The next 1,000 chances he gets on a play just like that, he's going to convert".

Sandy Leon's groundout plated the tiebreaking run in the seventh.

Mookie Betts had four hits and an RBI on his bobblehead night, while Xander Bogaerts delivered three hits and an RBI, Hanley Ramirez drove in two runs and Andrew Benintendi one for the Red Sox (5-5).

Craig Kimbrel worked a flawless ninth for his fourth save, adding Boston's 14th and 15th strikeouts of the game.

After recording the first three outs, Odorizzi came up lame after throwing a first-pitch changeup to Mitch Moreland in the second inning.

Erasmo Ramirez relived Odorizzi and Moreland belted his first pitch deep into the right-field seats, making it 1-0. "Some situations that I put myself into or things didn't go your way happened". Price has been on the DL since early spring training with a strained left elbow.

"At first I thought it wasn't going to get to the wall, so I thought I had a bead on it", Benintendi said. The Red Sox rallied to take the next two games, leaping back over the Rays to sit a mere 1.5 games behind the AL East leading Baltimore Orioles. In his previous start, he gave up four home runs in less than two innings. He went 7 1/3 innings in his last outing, the longest since he returned from Tommy John surgery last September.
